Jim Gaffigan, the fattest crackhead I’ve ever seen.

28 February 2008

I really enjoy watching or listening to stand up comedians.  Through an impulse buy at Best Buy the other day, I picked up Jim Gaffigan’s “Beyond the Pale” cd.  If you enjoy stand ups, or just laughing in general you should really check this guy out.  He’s a bit weird at times, but he riffs on that too and its hilarious.  We saw him at the Improv in DC a couple of years ago and it was one of the best acts I’ve ever seen.  Stomach was definitely hurting from laughing when I left.  The title above is a line off his CD, but I couldn’t find a clip of that so here’s a link to one of his more famous bits.

The high and low of my TV today

25 February 2008

I did a bit more TV watching today than I usually do. That would be due primarily to the fact that I watched four straight hours of short track speed skating today. If you’ve never watched this sport, its freaking crazy. You basically throw a speed skating rink in the drier for a little bit, shrink it down so the turns are real tight and the straight aways are pretty short, put 4-6 people on there that wanna go real fast, and throw in a little bit of chaos for good measure. I was watching some World Cup circuit stuff on Universal HD, and anytime the US is competing in something, I’ll watch it. I’ve watched the America’s Cup sailing race, and I was even one of the 12 people that watched curling during the last Olympics b/c the US was competing. Anyway, for a little taste, I’ve included a link to a video of the US stud Apolo Anton Ohno (some of you might know him from Dancing with the Stars) racing last year.

The lowlight of my TV watching today was the little bit that I watched of the red carpet arrivals before the show while I was eating with my fiancee. What a load of rubbish this is. My fiancee loves to see all the dresses and fashion, but the interviews are just dumb. They’re so quick and forced and they basically consist of the interviewer kissing the butt of a star and ask what they’re wearing. Why don’t they just have them come to a spot, ask them what they’re wearing, tell them to look at the cameras and pose and let them go on their way. The worst of the bunch is Regis. He’s just bad at it. I won’t be sad if I never watch that again.

Two Important Lessons

21 February 2008

I discovered two important things tonight.

1. Eclipses are still cool no matter how old I get.

2. Trying to take pictures of an eclipse when there is a windchill of 16 is pretty stupid.

For those of you that didn’t know, there was a full lunar eclipse tonight.  Its stuff like that that gives me one of those, “wow the universe is freakin big and I’m pretty insignificant in the greater scheme of things” feelings.  Its also just cool to see the moon like that.  It makes it more like a real object instead of just a big glowing ball in the sky when you can really see the texture and details of the craters on the surface.

When my hands thaw out, I’ll check to see if any of the pictures we took turned out, but I’m not real optimistic.

The Beginning

13 February 2008

This is the official sort of grand opening to my online world. For the last couple of months I’ve been learning ASP.net, C#, CSS, and various other web development technologies with the intent of creating my own web-page and blog. My life is likely to be undergoing some pretty significant changes pretty soon and I wanted a place where I can keep my family and friends up to speed on what’s going on with me.

This WordPress blog is a stopgap measure to use until I’m able to get my own page up and running since some of what I’m trying to learn is taking me longer than I had anticipated.

All that being said, welcome to the ThePresentTense.
